Self-care is an essential aspect of our lives, especially in professions that involve constant interaction with people. As a hair stylist, it's important to prioritize self-care to prevent burnout and ensure that you're always at your best for your clients. In this article, we'll be sharing some self-care hair stylist tips to help you maintain your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Being a hair stylist can be physically demanding; standing for long hours, using heavy tools, and performing repetitive motions can take a toll on your body. That's why it's crucial to incorporate exercises like stretching or yoga into your daily routine to keep yourself limber and prevent injuries. Additionally, taking breaks in between appointments to rest and recharge can also help reduce fatigue and stress levels. By prioritizing physical self-care, you'll be able to perform better at work while reducing the risk of burnout.

As a 23-year veteran cosmetologist, salon owner, and consultant, as well as an educator, I've noticed that hair stylists are hard-working professionals who often put others before themselves. However, as an empathic individual, I've also seen the negative effects that this can have on their mental and physical health. Therefore, it is important for hair stylists to practice self-care regularly, so they don't start focusing solely on their work and experience massive burnout.

1. We are dedicated…

We are dedicated to helping hair stylists take care of themselves, both physically and mentally. Hair stylists often work crazy hours, long shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays time. It can be challenging to find the time and energy to prioritize self-care when you're constantly on-the-go. However, it's vital to take care of yourself so that you can continue to provide excellent service to your clients.

As a single client may spend a day long with their stylist, it's essential for hairdressers to be a trusted neutral person. They need to create an environment where clients feel comfortable opening up about their struggles or triumphs outside of the salon. Whether it's going through a divorce or experiencing loss in their life, clients aren't making appointments just for a haircut; they're looking for connection and support from someone they trust. With these self-care hair stylist tips, we hope that more hair professionals will prioritize taking care of themselves while also providing exceptional service to their clients.

2. But we love it right?

As much as we love our hair, taking care of it can be quite overwhelming. We often find ourselves in a vicious cycle of wanting to look good but not having the time or resources to make ends meet. Thankfully, with some self-care stylist tips, we can easily maintain healthy and beautiful hair.

Let's face it, our hair is one of the first things people notice about us. It's important to take care of it not only for aesthetic reasons but also for our overall health and wellbeing. By following simple tips such as using natural products and avoiding heat styling tools, we can keep our hair healthy and happy. So yes, we do love our hair but with a little bit of extra care, we can show it even more love!

3. The time is now!

The time is now to start incorporating self-care into your daily routine, especially for hair stylists who work long hours on their feet. Let's face it, taking care of others' hair can be taxing on our own bodies and mental health. Without self-care, we risk experiencing massive burnout that can affect both our short and long term career goals.

As a hair stylist myself, I've learned personally the importance of prioritizing self-care. It not only helps me feel physically better but also mentally refreshed and motivated to continue doing what I love. So take some time each day to stretch, meditate or simply relax. Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup!

4. Self care tips to prevent burnout:

Self care is essential for beauty professionals to prevent burnout. To start, take thirty minutes to make yourself a priority before your workday begins. Pay attention to what you wear on your feet - ladies, skip the cute heels and opt for comfortable shoes like cute flats with a padded mat. Incorporate exercises like side bends or use a rubber ball to decrease pain in your neck and arms throughout the day.

Schedule short breaks into your work hours to decrease swelling and foot pain. Stay hydrated by bringing a large container of water and eat healthy by planning ahead and bringing nutritious snacks. While great intentions are important, make it happen by packing protein shakes or supplements including multi vitamins.

As hair stylists, our hands spend countless hours water washing clients' hair which strips natural protective oils leaving us prone to sore arms and carpal tunnel syndrome. Prevent these issues by investing in tools such as swivel thumb shears or even visiting a chiropractor regularly to keep your body aligned.

Don't forget about self-care practices outside of work such as scheduling time for mindfulness exercises or getting enough sleep - you'd be surprised how much this can impact a person's health! Create personal and professional goals written down so you have a plan on how to make those goals reality. Consider adding a side hustle or starting a retirement fund since this is physically demanding profession that can develop severe back or shoulder issues over time.
